He has annulled the impediments which preventedRussians from visiting foreign lands, and has granted ageneral amnesty for political oflenders, Poles and Russians;recalling the exiled from Siberia, and allowing fugitives toreturn; and is employing the whole energy of the govern-ment and nation in the work of covering his immense em-pire with nets of railroads. He is religious, and sincerelyattached to the national church, but without fanaticism.He continues still engaged in the vast work of improve-ment, in all the departments of his empire and among allclasses of his subjects of the different languages and con-ditions. The coronation ceremonies of the Emperor Alexanderand his Empress surpassed all pageants of modern times inimperial grandeur and magnificence. The extended ac-count of this great occasion, which follows this sketch, willadd interest both to the personaUties of the Emperor andthe Empress.

The Emperor Alexander II., the present ruler of thecolossal Empire of Russia, is consort to the original of thebeautiful j^ortrait which stands at the head of this briefbiogi-aphical sketch. The portrait, in its artistic beauty,will speak for itself, even though the lips utter no sound.This portrait, with its expressive lineaments and imperialdignity and grace, is copied from a photograph of life. Itwill be readily acknowledged by all lovers of art that theengraver has exerted almost inunitable skill in its execu-tion, deserving high praise. The delicacy and artistic per-fection in the outline and finish of the face, and theaccurate drawing of the dress and drapery, with the orna-ments which adorn the person of the Empress, combine inpresenting an object upon which the eye must dwell withpleasure.
